  24. A. Windows 95/NT Installation Notes
  25. -----------------------------------
  26. Late breaking notes regarding the use and installation of
  27. your FirePort PCI SCSI Host adapter.
  28.

  30. A.1 Installing Windows NT 4.0 from Windows 95 or MS-DOS:
  31.   YOU MUST HIT F6 when the message "Setup is inspecting 
  32.   your computer's hardware configuration"  appears on your screen.
  33.   Otherwise the machine will crash with an "INACESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE" 
  34.   message. If you encounter the crash, reboot your machine and 
  35.   press "F6" when the "Setup is inspecting..." message appears.
  36.

  38. A.2 Adding the FirePort to a Windows 95 system with an older 
  39.   Symbios SCSI host adapter:
  40.   You may see a problem with the Symbios driver not loading
  41.   after the addition of the FirePort card. This occurs when 
  42.   the Symbios driver detects the SCSI chip used on the FirePort
  43.   and decides to unload itself. (The FirePort is based on a 
  44.   newer, custom version of the Symbios chip, which is not 
  45.   supported by the Symbios driver.) To correct this, you must 
  46.   obtain the latest driver from Symbios Logic and perform the 
  47.   change driver function from the system properties panel. 
  48.   This version of the Symbios driver will cooperate with
  49.   the FirePort driver and allow both products to function
  50.   properly. Symbios can be reached at "http://www.symbios.com". 
  51.  
  52. A.3 Using Cd-Recordable drives with Windows NT 4.0:
  53.   Many CDR drives are brought into the Windows NT system as standard 
  54.   CD-ROM drives. The CD-ROM class driver handles access to the device 
  55.   and prevents the CDR applications from accessing
  56.   the CDR unit. There are 2 ways to work around this... One is
  57.   to replace the CD-ROM class driver (cdrom.sys) with one 
  58.   that allows write access. The other is to manually disable the 
  59.   CDROM class driver while using the device as a writer. Below are 
  60.   specific instructions for each of these options:
  61.   
  62.   A.3.1 Replacing the CDROM.SYS driver for Windows NT 4.0:
  63.    For your convenience, Diamond provides a replacement CDROM.SYS 
  64.    driver on the FirePort Utilities CDROM. This is a Beta version
  65.    of an Elektroson driver and is provided without warrantee or
  66.    support. Any use is at your sole risk and neither Diamond
  67.    nor Elektroson is responsible for any effects of using this
  68.    driver.
  69.    To install the replacement CDROM.SYS driver, execute the 
  70.    CDRINST.EXE program located on the FirePort Utilities
  71.    CDROM under the \NT4READ subdirectory.
  72.   
  73.   A.3.2 Manually disabling the CDROM.SYS driver for Windows NT 4.0:
  74.    There are two main steps to disabling the driver. You must 
  75.    first set the driver to "manual" startup and then the system 
  76.    will allow you to manually stop and start the driver. The 
  77.    following is a step by step procedure for this.
  78.    - Select "My Computer"
  79.    - Select "Devices"
  80.    - Scroll down to "Cdrom" and highlight it.
  81.    - Select the "Startup..." button
  82.    - Select the "Manual" setting
  83.    - Select "OK"
  84.    - Select "Close"
  85.    - Reboot your system.
  86.    When you are ready to use one of the CDR applications, you must 
  87.    stop the Cdrom driver before running the application. Do so 
  88.    via the following steps:
  89.    - Select "My Computer"
  90.    - Select "Devices"
  91.    - Scroll down to "Cdrom" and highlight it
  92.    - Select "Stop"
  93.    - Select "OK"
  94.    After this, the CDR applications will function properly, but you 
  95.    will not have normal access to any CD-ROM devices until you re
  96.    start the Cdrom driver. After exiting your CDR application you
  97.    should restart the Cdrom driver via the above procedure.
  98.  
  99. A.4 BIOS load problems with IBM Aptiva systems:
  100.   Some older versions of IBM Aptiva systems will not load the
  101.   BIOS from the FirePort card. This only affects systems running 
  102.   DOS or otherwise using the Int 13 BIOS code. (It is possible
  103.   to run Windows 95 using the BIOS, but there is a significant 
  104.   performance penalty.)
  105.   
  106.   This problem can be corrected by downloading a new system
  107.   BIOS from IBM. You should check with your IBM representative
  108.   or look on the IBM web page at "http:\\www.ibm.com".
  109.   
  110.   This problem was experienced on an IBM Aptiva C73, P5-200
  111.   with a BIOS version of BGAUS4E. The system paused with an
  112.   1805 Resource conflict error message. The problem was corrected
  113.   by downloading BIOS version BSTUS4B dated 8-15-96.
  114.  
  115. A.5 Motherboards with Symbios SCSI controllers and Award BIOS:
  116.   Some versions of Award system BIOS contain an older version of
  117.   the Symbios SCSI controller code that conflicts with the 
  118.   FirePort BIOS. If the system BIOS does not provide an 
  119.   option to disable the onboard SCSI controller, it may be
  120.   necessary to download a new system BIOS with a newer version
  121.   of the Symbios code. Contact your system vendor for information
  122.   on how to upgrade your system BIOS.
  123.     
  124. A.6 FirePort 40 Dual Motherboard compatibility constraints:
  125.   We have found compatibility problems with the FirePort 40 Dual
  126.   adapter with certain older motherboards. This applies ONLY to
  127.   the Dual adapter and NOT to the FirePort 20 or 40. This problem
  128.   appears to be due to how the system BIOS initializes multi-function
  129.   PCI cards. (The FirePort 40 Dual is implemented as a 
  130.   multi-function PCI device, rather than a PCI-to-PCI bridge.)
  131.   If the FirePort 40 Dual is not recognized by your system, it
  132.   may be necessary to upgrade your system BIOS. 
  133.  
  134.   Specific motherboards that Diamond has found to evidence this problem:
  135.   - Intel VS440FX PentiumPro motherboard with AMI BIOS.
  136.     Solution: No BIOS upgrade available at ship date. Diamond
  137.     recommends using the FirePort 20 or 40 in these systems.
  138.   - Mitac PH5400V Pentium motherboard with Award BIOS.
  139.     Solution: No BIOS upgrade available at ship date. Diamond
  140.     recommends using the FirePort 20 or 40 in these systems.
  141.   - Intel TigerEye (Found in Gateway P5-166, model no. BATC)
  142.     BIOS revision: 1.00.06.CY1T
  143.     Solution: Upgrade system BIOS to 1.00.08.CY1T. Available from
  144.     Intel's web site.

  195. Directions:
  196. 1  After acquiring the file FIREPORT.ROM (from the Diamond web 
  197.    site or from the FirePort installation diskette) create 
  198.    a bootable DOS diskette. You must use DOS 5.0 or higher.
  199.    
  200. 2  Insert the diskette into drive A:.  Boot the system to the 
  201.    DOS prompt A:\>. Insert the FirePort installation diskette
  202.    into drive A:.
  203.  
  204. 3  Type FLASHDMD and press Enter.
  205.  
  206. 4  The first screen displayed indicates what files are necessary
  207.    to upgrade and general instructions to upgrade. Press Enter
  208.    to continue.

  210. 5  The Main window has 7 command lines. First View Board Summary(3).
  211.    Make certain that the utility identifies your SCSI controller.

  213. 6  Backup the old version of the BIOS to the diskette.
  214.    Give the file a unique name with a .CSB, .ROM, or .BIN extension.

  216. 7  Update current SCSI BIOS. Enter the file name of the BIOS to
  217.    upgrade or press F2 to view the available files. There should be
  218.    2 files available: the BIOS file that was just backed up, and 
  219.    FIREPORT.ROM. If you downloaded a new BIOS file, insert the 
  220.    diskette containing that version.
  221.  
  222. 8  Highlight the file FIREPORT.ROM for the Diamond FirePort Host
  223.    Adapter and press Enter. It will then display the file 
  224.    name and notify you that the file has been successfully read. 
  225.    Press Enter again. The system will prompt you whether or not to
  226.    overwrite the BIOS that is currently flashed. Select "Y" to 
  227.    upgrade. The system will then display the card information and
  228.    verify that the new BIOS is installed. Press any key.  Reboot(6).
  229.  
  230. 9  Verify the new BIOS has been installed by viewing the 3rd line
  231.    of the SDMS banner (which should read PCI-4.xx.xx.xxx) when 
  232.    displayed.
  233.  
  234. ** A bootable DOS diskette can be created by formatting it with the 
  235.    /s option (e.g., format a: /s).  Do not install any memory 
  236.    managers or SCSI drivers on the diskette. A minimum of 200K of 
  237.    conventional memory is needed to execute the flash utility. 
  238.    Add the DOS mouse driver to AUTOEXEC.BAT for mouse control of the
  239.    flash utility.

  257. D. Problems Addressed
  258. ---------------------
  259. 1. Windows 95 Shutdown Issue:
  260.    - New version of FirePort.mpd (Windows 95 SCSI mini-port driver)
  261.    In some circumstances, Windows 95 would not properly shutdown. 
  262.    The shutdown process would not get past the "Please wait while
  263.    your computer shuts down" screen.
  264.  
  265. 2. Teac 16X CDROM Drive did note work under Windows 95:
  266.    - New version of FirePort.mpd (Windows 95 SCSI mini-port driver)
  267.    This included the Teac 16X CDROM Reader.
  268.  
  269. 4. Multi-LUN device support:
  270.    - New version of symcd.sys (MS-DOS CD-ROM driver)
  271.    Certain multi-LUN devices would not function properly under MS-DOS.
  272.    This included the Panasonic model LF-1004 PD/CD-ROM.
  273.  
  274. 5. IBM model DCHS-39100-09W disk drive:
  275.    - New version of FirePort.rom (FLASH BIOS image file)
  276.    The IBM model DCHS-39100-09W disk was not recognized during the
  277.    boot process.
  278.  
  279. 6. Quantum Atlas II:
  280.    - New version of ASPI8XX.SYS (ASPI Manager)
  281.    Data corruption occurred when transfering files between a CD-ROM 
  282.    and the Quantum Atlas II drive in DOS.  This problem has been 
  283.    corrected with this new ASPI manager.
  284.  
  285. 7. FirePort LED connector:
  286.    - New version of Fireport.mpd and Fireport.sys (mini-port drivers) 
  287.    When an LED was plugged into the LED connector on the FirePort, and
  288.    when no devices were present, the LED would stay on. This problem 
  289.    has been corrected with this new driver.
